Trap is a new subtype seen on instant cards. A Trap can spring out of nowhere if your opponent makes a false move!
You can cast a Trap just like any other instant, simply by paying its mana cost. However, each Trap has a sharply discounted alternative cost that you can use if a certain condition has been met. For example, Needlebite Trap says, “If an opponent gained life this turn, you may pay rather than pay Needlebite Trap’s mana cost.” That’s much cheaper than the Needlebite Trap normally costs!
Casting a Trap by paying its alternative cost doesn’t change what the Trap does, just how much mana you have to spend to cast it. It also doesn’t change the Trap’s “mana cost” or “converted mana cost,” if some other effect looks for those. Watch out for Traps that cost to cast … and don’t get caught yourself!
